PHILADELPHIA — Rosters expand to 28 players on Monday, and the Phillies were active on the eve of that expansion Sunday.
The Phillies claimed Upper Perkiomen graduate Tim Mayza off waivers from Pittsburgh and, per a report from ESPN’s Buster Olney, are poised to add former Red Sox pitcher Walker Buehler. It gives the Phillies a chance to augment their postseason bullpen with two pitchers who took part in last year’s World Series.
To make room for Mayza on the 40-man roster, Zack Wheeler was transferred to the 60-day injured list.
To be eligible for the postseason, players have to be on the 40-man roster on Sept. 1. The Phillies can add one pitcher and one position player on Monday.
