Typically, in the movies, people who raid tombs and steal precious artifacts are cursed. But what happens in real life? Well, one man's curse was a prison sentence after he was caught smuggling hundreds of ancient Egyptian artifacts into the U.S., according to a press release from the United States Department of Justice.

The act of smuggling precious relics from Egypt is big business, often making the headlines. In fact, in 2018, the Antiquities Coalition estimated that $3 billion worth of Egyptian artifacts had been smuggled since 2011. Archaeologists have even recently discovered three new tombs there.

In line with the money that can be made from this type of crime, officials emphasized the importance of preserving heritage and protecting it from exploitation.
