20 years ago, this weekend, New Orleans and the surrounding areas were devastated by Hurricane Katrina.

An estimated one and half million people evacuated the state. Many of them relocated to North Texas and had to start their lives all over, like master barber Gary Valentine.

At his barber shop, called Positive Vibe, he has pieces and memorabilia that remind him of home.

He was forced to leave New Orleans 20 years ago as Katrina hit.

“I just went on 20 and came straight to Dallas with two days’ worth of clothes and no supplies,” Valentine described. “20 years later, here I am.”

A strange city he didn’t expect to call home.

“Right now, it’s not so strange, and it’s a home away from home,” Valentine said.
