On Aug. 11, the Angus Reid Institute released a poll that should catch the attention of anyone serious about Canada’s future. Over 1,000 Canadians were asked if they favoured a year of civilian service for young adults between the ages of 19 and 29. More than 70% said yes. That support came not just from older Canadians, but from the very age group who would be asked to serve.

Support held strong across categories like health care and the environment. Mandatory military service, however, told a different story. Canadians were split down the middle — 44% against and 43% in favour. Those results show Canadians are not clamouring for conscription, but they are clearly open to structured service that benefits communities and develops young citizens.
