While the criminal defense attorneys for Kilmar Abrego Garcia claimed last week that they were unable to communicate with the alleged human smuggler following his arrest by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) last week, a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) official told The Tennessee Star that detainees are able to communicate with friends and family. 

Asked whether there were any procedures at DHS which would prohibit the alleged human smuggler from communicating with his criminal defense attorneys while detained by ICE in Virginia, an official at the agency told The Star on Friday, "All detainees are provided ample opportunity to communicate with their attorneys and family members."
