A wildfire east of Fresno in California is blowing smoke up into the Truckee Meadows.

“It’s bringing a pretty big plume of smoke pushing up through our area,” said Gigi Giralte of the National Weather Service’s Reno office on Monday.

“In the mornings, they’re often the worst for smoke because it just sits in the valleys.”

The Garnet Fire started Aug. 24 after a lightning strike in the Sequoia National Forest. The U.S. Forest Service reported Monday that it has burned almost 22,000 acres and is 12% contained.

Giralte said a low-pressure system off the California coast combined with a high-pressure area above the Four Corners region where Utah, Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona meet were combining to bring the smoke into the Reno area.
