Lottery ticket puts retired railroad worker on track to $100K win

SILVER SPRING, MD — A retired railroad worker and Army veteran from Montgomery County is celebrating a six-figure windfall after a scratch-off ticket he purchased at a Safeway in Wheaton turned out to be a $100,000 winner.

Clifford Briggs of Silver Spring claimed his prize at Maryland Lottery headquarters in Baltimore on August 29, after uncovering the top prize on the $10 Double Your Money scratch-off. Briggs, who stopped to buy groceries before visiting the lottery kiosk inside the store at 11201 Georgia Avenue, purchased six tickets — and one paid off big.

Briggs said he initially believed he had won $10,000 when he matched his first number. A second match added another $10,000, prompting calls to friends and family. B
