FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Some rural residents woke up to gunshots as dove hunting season began before sunrise on Monday.

September 1 marks the official start to California's dove hunting season and the single busiest day on the hunting calendar.

This year, it coincides with the Labor Day holiday, giving more people the opportunity to take part.

Hunters are allowed to hunt from a half-hour before sunrise until sunset, now through September 15.

The second half of the season will take place from November 8 to December 22.

Hunters are encouraged to review the dove hunting regulations on the California Department of Fish and Wildlife website.
