IOWA CITY, Iowa —

University of Iowa Health Care is set to expand its services by offering Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) transport via helicopter starting Sept. 1.

ECMO is a life support therapy used for critically ill patients with severe heart or lung failure.

This new service will assist in transferring patients from referral hospitals to University of Iowa Health Care, which is recognized internationally for its ECMO unit.

The team will be on call all hours every day and will be able to reach patients within a 170-mile radius of Iowa City.

Other Iowa hospitals, including MercyOne, provide ECMO transport as well.
