LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - For some people, they simply see Labor Day as the unofficial end of summer. But for many American workers – especially those working in the trades – Monday was a celebration of their hard work and a reminder of the importance of workers’ rights.

“Labor made the foundation of this country,” said Vera Newton, UAW Local 862, Ford Motor Company. “And people look at labor and say, ‘Oh, we don’t really need unions.’ We need unions in order to regulate your workday, in order to regulate your 8-hour workday, your holidays, labor is the foundation of this country.”

In Louisville, hundreds of local labor union members and their families came out to Kentucky Kingdom to celebrate at the Greater Louisville United Labor Picnic, calling the day a day of unity.
