DAVIS, Calif. — U.S. Navy World War II veteran Jimmy Hernandez took to the skies to celebrate his 100th birthday, completing a tandem skydive with his son and grandson at SkyDance Skydiving in Davis .
Born on August 29, 1925, Hernandez said up until this point, he has never celebrated his birthday. “A lot of people look forward [to] the birthday. But I had a lot of family to take care of,” Hernandez said.
After serving in the war, Hernandez settled down in California, becoming a carpenter and a father of 12, and now has over 120 descendants.
Hernandez said he initially started thinking about skydiving when he turned 96 and decided his 100th birthday would be the perfect time to finally take the leap. - especially with the support of his son and grandson.
