ISLE OF PALMS, S.C. (WCBD) — Parking lots filled early, traffic backed up along Palm Boulevard, and restaurants stayed busy as Isle of Palms welcomed big Labor Day crowds on Monday.

Families and tourists carried chairs, umbrellas and coolers to the sand, creating a wall of color across the shoreline. For some, the day was about more than just soaking up the sun.

“It’s our anniversary, so 17 years, and so we thought we’d celebrate at the beach, taking a beautiful day, and we really are. It’s amazing out there,” said beachgoer Peter Novotny.

Local businesses said the rush was no surprise.

“It’s definitely been more than usual,” said Christopher Tiller, a host at Lawrence’s Seafood Company. “Lot of tourists, lot of family from inside the area coming up.”
