HOUSTON — Houston Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans says safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson will be ready when the team opens the season against the Los Angeles Rams Sunday, easing concerns after the veteran was carted off the field with an injury during training camp last month.

“[S] C.J. [Gardner-Johnson] is doing really well, progressing fine. We expect him to be ready for Week 1,” Ryans told reporters on Sunday.

Gardner-Johnson, who joined the Texans in March through a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles, was hurt during practice in West Virginia on Aug. 7 . He had to be carted off and fears were that he may have suffered a torn ACL, which would have likely sidelined him for the season. It was later learned that the injury wasn’t as serious as first thought.
