SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — The South Dakota Highway Patrol can't always count on the other car sticking around.
"People flee from us, and number one is public safety," state trooper Dan Hup said Monday.
Safety is the motivation for a technology that, per Hup, "several" Highway Patrol cars now have called StarChase. Hup says the patrol has had it for a few weeks. He says the technology can mean fewer high-speed pursuits, which, of course, have the potential to be dangerous.
"StarChase is a GPS tracker that we can deploy from the front of our vehicles on to a suspect vehicle that is fleeing from us," Hup said. "The reason for it is public safety. We don't have to use our traditional pursuit tactics."
