BILLINGS, Mont. – Rimrock Mall's future is uncertain after the owners, Kohan Retail Investment Group, missed a deadline to settle nearly $600,000 in property taxes owed to Yellowstone County.
The missed deadline means third parties can now purchase the debt, though ownership of the mall might not change immediately. Hank Peters, Yellowstone County Treasurer, explained that if a third party buys the debt, they would not gain ownership but would receive a payout from Kohan due to the 10% interest accruing on the debt.
If no third party steps in and Kohan continues to leave the debt unpaid, they will keep ownership until August 1, 2028. After that date, the county has the option to take over the tax deed and auction the mall.
