COLUMBIA, S.C. — The summer travel season is winding down and with it comes the end of what law enforcement officials refer to as the "100 Deadly Days of Summer" — the time between Memorial Day and Labor Day when traffic fatalities typically spike across the state.

Lance Corporal Brittany Glover with the South Carolina Highway Patrol said the agency increased its presence on interstates in an effort to reduce crashes.

“We have increased our patrols on the interstate, making sure everybody gets to their destination safe,” she said.

With heavier travel during the summer months, Glover says there isn’t a singular cause behind the rise in fatalities but several risk factors are often involved.
