The week of Aug. 24-30 was Week 1 of Iowa high school football in Iowa.

There were several exciting games featuring teams from the Des Moines metro area, highlighted by Class 5A No. 3 West Des Moines Valley's 20-19 victory over No. 1 Dowling Catholic in a huge rivalry game to open the season in West Des Moines.

It was also the opening week of cross country for some schools. The 4A high school boys golf season continued to pick up steam as well.

There were several standout performances from male high school athletes from the metro area during the week.
