PORTLAND, Maine — The Cross Insurance Arena was packed on Labor Day as U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders endorsed two Maine candidates-- Graham Platner for U.S. Senate and Troy Jackson for governor-- ahead of the upcoming 2026 elections.
Political newcomer Graham Platner, a veteran and oysterman from Sullivan, launched his bid on August 19. He announced just nine days later that his campaign quickly raised $1 million and attracted thousands of volunteers.
"I am running because it is time for change," Platner said at the rally.
Platner spoke, getting some standing ovations in between, when addressing why "the world we live in today is not how it has to be." He referenced flaws in the healthcare system, struggles to afford a home, and the cost of a college education.
