LAHAINA (HawaiiNewsNow) - More than two years after the Maui wildfire disaster, some residents are still struggling to survive.
Kupuna have added challenges such as living on a fixed income and navigating confusing and complex topics.
“It’s like a nightmare,” said Lahaina fire survivor Tina Bass.
Bass is not talking about Aug. 8, 2023, when her home of 30 years went up in flames.
She is talking about what she has endured since that horrific day.
“All I want to do is go back home,” she said.
During the inferno, Bass lived in Hale Mahaolu Eono, an affordable housing complex for kupuna right off Lahainaluna Road.
Several of her friends and neighbors died in the disaster.
She is grateful she made it out alive after being trapped on Front Street for hours.
