MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Labor Day weekend for many usually includes hitting up the grocery store to get ingredients for the last barbecue of summer. But some shoppers tell FOX13 rising food costs this year are forcing them to cut out the cookout.
"I see now a lot of people are not really doing as much cooking out or whatever, because the price of groceries is higher," said Kelly Mason of Memphis. "The price of meat is much more expensive than it used to be. So now it's all about kind of scaling down a little bit or either doing a potluck situation. It makes you have to budget more efficiently."
According to the latest Consumer Price Index, in July, food prices were up 2.7% from one year ago. Ground beef prices rose 11.5%, and beef steak prices rose 12% compared to this time last year.
