ABINGDON, Va. — Washington County Promise Program, a partnership between Wellspring Foundation of Southwest Virginia and Virginia Highlands Community College, has been expanded, allowing three additional kindergarten classes to attend VHCC tuition-free.

Launched in October 2024, the Promise Program initially covered students graduating high school between 2025 and 2037—effectively last year’s kindergartners through high school seniors. With this expansion, kindergarteners enrolling in Washington County schools in 2025, 2026 and 2027 will also be eligible, according to a written statement.

Funded by Wellspring Foundation, the Promise Program covers tuition and fees not already paid by other financial aid or scholarships. In addition, it provides up to $500 per seme
