NEW LONDON, Conn. — An ambulance crew is being credited for spotting a fire before it spread to other structures in New London, officials said.
Just before 2 a.m., a New London Fire Department ambulance was returning from an emergency call when it saw smoke in the area of Broad Street. They canvassed the area and found a single-family home on Vauxhall Street that was engulfed in flames.
Fire crews were alerted, and the first on the scene found heavy fire conditions throughout the home, which was described as a wood-frame ranch-style home. Due to the intensity of the flames, fire crews had to work in "defensive mode," staying out of the house and attacking the blaze from the outside.
Once the bulk of the fire was knocked down, firefighters were able to enter the home.
