With Alberta teachers on the verge of striking or being locked out, it could be a while before Alberta students get anywhere near a school library.
Of course, the province has taken a keen interest in the content that might populate those libraries. However, what was originally billed as an attempt to ensure that school libraries contain age-appropriate material has turned into a fiasco.
And as much as the government would prefer to lash out at school boards, this mess is completely their own doing.
Last week, we learned of an internal list at the Edmonton Public School Board (EPSB) identifying books to be pulled in keeping with the province’s new standards. As stated in the document, these books “have been identified as containing explicit sexual content.”
That list contains more than
