WEST JORDAN, Utah (ABC4) — An ordinary deal went wrong Sunday after one man allegedly tried to purchase an iPhone with counterfeit money.

On Sunday, Aug. 31, two men who connected via Facebook Marketplace agreed to meet up in the parking lot of Smith's Marketplace in West Jordan. The seller was hoping to sell an iPhone 16 Pro on behalf of his sister.

During the meet up, police say the buyer, Irvin Renova-Sandoval, 27, agreed to pay $850 for the phone. The victim told police he was only given $650 in bills labeled, "For Motion Picture Purposes Only."

According to charging documents, when the seller confronted Renova-Sandoval about the counterfeit money, he pulled out a gun and loaded a round into the chamber while saying, "Don't tell anyone."
