New figures have revealed that drug misuse deaths in Aberdeen in 2024 fell by 10 compared to the previous year, but have seen a rise in Aberdeenshire .
The were a total of 1,017 drug misuse deaths last year, according to latest statistics published by National Records of Scotland. This is a decrease of 13% (155 deaths) compared with 2023 and the lowest number registered since 2017.
Drug deaths increased over the last two decades to their peak in 2020. They have generally decreased since then, with the exception of a 12% increase in 2023.
This trend is reflected in Aberdeen, where 44 deaths were recorded in 2024 compared to 55 in 2023 - a decrease of 18.5%. However, in Aberdeenshire, the number is reversed, with 29 deaths in 2024 and 10 in 2023.
