On the 80th anniversary of World War II, the Sun Chronicle asks: Would we still be up to the challenge?

The numbers are staggering.

More than 16 million Americans served in the military during World War II, or roughly one in every eight Americans. Of those, 3,241 came from Attleboro alone.

American troops served an average of 16 months overseas, in the bitter cold of Europe and the stifling heat of Africa and the Pacific.

Of those U.S. service members, more than 400,000 never made it home, and nearly 700,000 more were wounded.

World War II, fought from 1939 to 1945, was the deadliest war in world history and involved more than 30 countries around the globe. More than 50 million people lost their lives.
