In response to Josue Sierra’s recent commentary criticizing the legalization of marijuana, I would observe that everyone has an opinion and this particular opinion is from a resident of rural Cecil County ( “Legal weed is hurting, not helping, Maryland,” Aug. 31). As a Baltimore resident, I have experienced a dramatic drop in the corner black market sales of marijuana as well as a significant drop in homicides which the politicians take credit for but which, I believe, is very much related to the ability to purchase pot legally.

Just as prohibition of alcohol did not work and led to an even worse disaster with death and destruction and the creation of a huge illegal empire, so did the laws on marijuana. The health effects of marijuana are much more benign than that of any other drug, le
