A group of lawmakers that includes two Oakland County Republicans are pushing to allow local governments to set their own speed limits, departing from Michigan's current formula.

House Bill 4597 would let cities, counties, townships or villages set their own speed limit with the consent of the locality's top law enforcement official and a public hearing on the matter. Localities would not have to conduct a traffic or engineering study to change the speed limits under the legislation.
