At their meeting last week, Newnan council members got their first look at possible guidelines to regulate raising chickens in the city.
In 2010, the Newnan City Council passed an ordinance that, in part, prohibited chickens in the city, according to a report from Dean Smith, senior planner for the city.
The report included with the council members’ meeting agendas listed odor and noise, predators attracted by the chickens, and chickens getting loose from the coops as complaints the city received leading up to the 2010 ordinance.
Councilmember Rhodes Shell suggested at the council retreat in March that they consider a new ordinance that would allow city residents to keep chickens.
“I just think it’s very valuable to some of our citizens who want that,” Shell said during the retreat.
