MACON, Ga. — The Southwest and Northeast High School athletic programs were each fined $1,500 after a "melee" erupted on the field during the third quarter, according to a letter and investigative records from the Georgia High School Association (GHSA).
The records shines new light on the events of Aug. 23 leading up to the brawl, which caused the game to end early and sparked both Bibb County Schools and GHSA investigations into what went wrong.
But the GHSA also put each program on "Severe Warning Status" for a full calendar year, which means any similar violations could led to even more serious penalties being assessed against the programs, according to the letter dated Aug. 25.
