ESSEX, Conn. (WFSB) - The first combat submarine was invented in Connecticut.
100 years later, Connecticut is still home to the submarine.
Found at the base of the Connecticut River, the CT River Museum is dedicated to the waterway’s 12,000 years of history.
“It’s a really wide-ranging story, and it’s one I think we should all know and care about because it really is, fundamentally, the story of America,” said Elizabeth Kaeser, director of the CT River Museum.
Running 410 miles from the top of New Hampshire down to the Long Island Sound, Kaeser says the river is really the backbone of New England.
“People only really notice their little part of it. What I like to do is encourage people to think about the connections, the fact that it is one river,” Kaeser said.
