Gavin Newsom was on fire.
In the course of a single 53-minute interview at Politico’s Sacramento summit last week, the California governor went after President Donald Trump as forcefully as he — or anyone of his stature — ever has.
He accused Trump of lying, “lighting democracy on fire,” running the greatest grift operation in the history of the world,” and trying to ruin Christmas with high tariffs. He said foreign leaders are “laughing at [Trump] behind his back ... It’s an embarrassment.”
This was not said tongue-in-cheek. Unlike his press office’s recent online trolling of the president by mimicking Trump’s most outrageous social-media posts , Newsom was not trying to be funny.
