HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The Battleship Missouri Memorial marked 80 years since the of the end of World War II on Tuesday.
On September 2, 1945, Japan formally surrendered aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay, officially ending the deadliest war in history.
Veterans, military leaders, and dignitaries gathered on the decks of the USS Missouri at Pearl Harbor to honor that moment and the sacrifices that made it possible.
The memorial hosted a special ceremony on the ship’s fantail, the very site where Japan formally surrendered in 1945.
The program paid tribute to those who served and honored eight surviving crewmembers who witnessed the surrender 80 years ago.
