NEW HAVEN, Conn. — A former landfill in New Haven is getting a second life as a hub for renewable energy.

City officials announced a new solar project Tuesday that will install nearly 2,000 solar panels on top of decades’ worth of waste, creating a site capable of generating more than one megawatt of clean electricity.

“There will be 1,900 of these on top of that,” New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker said during the announcement, pointing to the expanse of panels to be installed.

The city has partnered with Greenskies Clean Energy to develop the project. When complete, the company will lease the site, sell the electricity back into the grid and send monthly payments back to the city.
