WHIGHAM, Ga. (WCTV) - One man was arrested after officers found a severely neglected donkey, the Grady County Sheriff’s Office announced.

Deputies with the Grady County Sheriff’s Office and the Georgia Department of Agriculture Law Enforcement Division executed a search warrant at a home on Bunn Lane in Whigham on August 28.

Law enforcement found a donkey in what they call “a dire state.” The donkey was severely malnourished and dehydrated.

The donkey was removed from the property and taken to an equine rehabilitation center where it is receiving emergency treatment.

Derek Jones was arrested and charged with cruelty to animals. He was taken to the Grady County Detention Center, where he later posted bond.

Per the GCSO, additional charges are under review.
