COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - At a ceremony at the Statehouse on Tuesday to remember the 80th anniversary of Japan’s surrender, the only Midlands World War II veteran in attendance shared his memories.

The moment Japan surrendered, veteran Willie White said, “everybody got on the floor and kissed the floor, glad it was over with.”

White was the only veteran from the war at the ceremony today. However, several members of his family and veterans from other wars shared experiences of their family members who died during the war.

All expressed gratitude for White and his service.
