SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) - Three people in Spartanburg County are accused of using books to smuggle drugs into South Carolina prisons, according to documents from the South Carolina Department of Corrections.

One of those charged, Shataysha Lewis, is a former corrections officer. Investigators said drug-laced books were sent to 14 different prisons and reached at least 20 inmates. All of the parcels were dropped off at the Woodruff Post Office and mailed to prisons across the state, between March and June 2025.

Authorities identified the suspects as Lewis, Devin Kershaw, a former inmate at the Spartanburg County Detention Center who was released in 2022, and Coure Terry.

U.S. Postal Inspector, Breslin Steverson, said the tactic is not unusual.
