SPOKANE, Wash. – The Spokane Fire Department is set to start a wildland fuels reduction project on the South Hill Bluff area. This initiative comes after a series of arson fires occurred in the area in May.

The project is expected to take approximately three months and will cover up to 200 acres of land west of the South Hill. Crews will focus on trimming trees and creating more space between potential danger zones to reduce fire risk.

This marks the second operation in this area. The first took place in May when crews cleared out large amounts of dry grass and vegetation on the bluff.

The reduction work is scheduled to begin on October 1.
