MACON, Ga. — The Bibb County Commission has taken the first step toward providing substantial property tax relief for senior residents, voting unanimously Tuesday night to ask the state legislature to consider new homestead exemptions that could reduce or eliminate property taxes for older homeowners.

The proposed legislation would create tax relief based on age: residents 65 and older could claim an additional $10,000 homestead exemption, those 75 and older could receive a $15,000 exemption, and homeowners 85 and older would be exempt from property taxes entirely.

For Zelda Card, who will turn 64 in November, she says the break is a well-deserved boost for over 40 years of working.

"I deserve and people like myself deserve all the benefits that are due to us," said Card.
