COOK COUNTY, Minn. (Northern News Now) - New technology has the ability to save lives in remote parts of the BWCA wilderness.
However, last week, it prompted an unnecessary emergency response to a remote part of the Boundary Waters.
A search and rescue team went out around noon on August 27 to Seagull Lake, after receiving iPhone 911 texts from someone in the BWCA.
The alert notified authorities there was a person on fire.
First responders ultimately didn’t find anyone needing rescue and it was later confirmed to be a false alarm.
Now, authorities are pointing to the new iPhone feature being the culprit.
These 911 texts were reported through the emergency SOS feature as part of Apple’s new satellite technology.
