Queensland's status as the capital of crime in Australia has been cemented by new national figures that revealed the surging number of sexual assault victims in the state last year.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics' latest crime victim data showed 289,449 Queenslanders were victims of crime in 2024.
The figure is only marginally lower than 2023, which marked a record high.
The ABS numbers point to significant increases in violent offences.
Just under 10,000 Queenslanders reported sexual assaults last year, which is an 11 per cent rise on 2023 and the most ever recorded in the data set's 32-year history.
The number of assault victims who came forward increased by 12 per cent.
However while violence soared, property crime trends were mixed.
More than 45,000 break-ins were reported
