British holidaymakers could get free gifts if they travel to Majorca

Majorca is set to give away free presents to tourists in an effort to entice them back to the Balearic Islands. This followed concerns among Spanish officials that mounting anti-tourism sentiment is driving the island's economy towards collapse.

The "Smile at a Tourist Day" scheme, co-ordinated by local retail organisation Afedeco, will see shops throughout Majorca handing out gift bags to visitors who shop at their establishments on February 27 next year. The bags, which will be bright green, will feature a note stating: "Tourist, go home happy. Be happier returning to Mallorca soon."
