The new athletic season started in earnest last week with Hawaii developing a new crop of heroes on the continent, led by Campbell’s Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele making his first start at quarterback for California.

There are 12 Division I quarterbacks who played at least a season of high school football in Hawaii.

In all, there are 188 Division I football players from Hawaii — 174 of them played high school here. The state has 26 high schools represented, led by Saint Louis with 31 players.

Volleyball is well represented around the country as well, with 72 Hawaii girls playing Division I ball.
