MARKHAM — IndyCar is coming to Markham, Ont.
The open-wheel auto racing series announced on Wednesday that it’s moving the Grand Prix of Toronto to the city’s northeastern suburb.
It’s one of the oldest races on the IndyCar schedule, with the first race held in 1986.
Exhibition Place in downtown Toronto has hosted that event, currently called the Ontario Honda Dealers Indy Toronto, since its inaugural race.
The race will now be held in Markham Centre, the city’s downtown core that is home to many Canadian corporate headquarters, the York University Markham Campus, and the acclaimed Markham Pan Am Centre.
IndyCar is the highest class of open-wheel auto racing in North America.
