The CEO of the Sioux Falls YMCA has filed to run for the City Council seat held by Councilor Sarah Cole — with Cole supporting his campaign.

James Oppenheimer filed to run for the council's At-Large A seat on Aug. 28, telling the Argus Leader he is "excited to do the most I can for Sioux Falls."

A release announcing his candidacy cites his experience heading nonprofits in the area, including the YMCA and the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society .

Oppenheimer said his campaign would be focused on roads, public safety and "sensible and balanced growth" for the city, all with the aim of making Sioux Falls a place where families can thrive.
