The Atlantic City Housing Authority was taken over the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development after years of issues in August.

Here are five things to know about the takeover:

WHAT DOES THE ATLANTIC CITY HOUSING AUTHORITY OVERSEE: The agency oversee seven housing developments as well as various single family housing sites around the city.

HOW DID WE GET HERE: HUD sent a letter to the Housing Authority on July 22 declaring it in substantial default, U.S. Rep. Jeff Van Drew, R-2nd, said at the time. In a 15-page response submitted Aug. 4 , the local authority wrote that the issues plaguing the agency were there before the now-ousted commissioners were on the board.
