PIERRE, S.D. (KELO) -- The municipal government for the city of Garretson is accepting a financial punishment for failing to maintain some safety records for its natural-gas pipeline.
Garretson faces a civil penalty of as much as $5,000.
The proposed agreement calls for the city to pay $2,500 to the South Dakota Public Utilities Commission by mid-October.
The remaining $2,500 would be suspended if the city follows an action plan covering the next three years.
The state commission is scheduled to decide on Tuesday, September 9, whether to accept the compromise.
Mary Zanter is the pipeline safety director for the commission. She found during a routine inspection that Garretson didn't have required records of pressure-relief calculations for 2022 and 2023.
