Federal prosecutors have filed two charges against Western North Carolina veteran Jay Carey after arresting him Aug. 25 for burning an American flag in Lafayette Park outside of the White House.
On Aug. 27, Carey was charged in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia, overseen by U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro, with lighting a fire in an undesignated area and tending to it "in a manner that threatened, caused damage to, and resulted in the burning of property, real property, and park resources, and created a public safety hazard." Both charges are considered violations of National Park Service federal statutes that are typically resolved with fines and have a potential maximum sentence of six months.
