It's no secret healthcare in the Northwest Territories is understaffed, but an ongoing strategy to recruit new workers draws on the North's other resources to entice prospects.

A shortage of doctors and nurses has forced temporary closures of several vital services in recent years. Hay River's emergency department relied on virtual physicians to fill a staffing gap in July and was briefly without an ER doctor at the end of April. Obstetrics units have closed at both Stanton Territorial Hospital and Inuvik Regional Hospital on several occasions, and smaller health clinics in various communities periodically post notices of service reductions.
