HONOLULU, Hawaii (WFLA) — A webcam captured a unique sight Tuesday as lava spewed from one of the world's most active volcanoes.
Video released by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) showed a whirlwind of air sending ash into the sky next to a lava fountain at Hawaii's Kilauea volcano.
The ash appeared to form a vortex, similar to a tornado. It swirled near the lava fountain and created an unusual looking combo.
“We know you’ve heard of a volcano…but how about a volnado?” the USGS said in a social media post sharing the video.
Located just 200 miles south of Honolulu, the Kilauea volcano has erupted several times since late last year. According to the USGS, Tuesday's eruption is its 32nd episode of volcanic activity since December.
